Biography

Dr. Akiko Chiba is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Duke University and Associate Program Director of Duke Breast Surgery Fellowship Program. She is a breast surgical oncologist who cares for patients with breast cancer, benign breast diseases and those with an increased risk of breast cancer. Her clinical interests include young patients with breast cancer, genetic mutation carriers, and de-escalation of surgical treatment after neoadjuvant therapies. She is also studying the role of microbiome in breast cancer and how modulation of microbiome could be used to improve patient outcome. In addition she has interest in minimally invasive breast surgery using Single-Port Robot. On the national level, she serves on the Breast Committee for Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, Publications Committee for Association of Women Surgeons, and Member Engagement Committee for American Society of Breast Surgeons. She is a board member of NC Chapter of American College of Surgeons.
