Dr Christine Castater is a "non-traditional" student who decided to pursue medicine after being a victim of violence. She finished her BA, MD, and MBA all at the University of Connecticut before completing General Surgery Residency at UCSF East Bay, and Acute Care Surgery and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Emory University. She is Vice Chair of Operational Diversity, Inclusive Excellence, Justice, and Belonging, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Assistant Clerkship Director, and Trauma Surgery Site Director all at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) Department of Surgery. She is also a trauma and critical care surgeon, and the Medical Director for the Acute Care Surgery Wards all at Grady Memorial Hospital (GMH). She communicates with patients and families daily as a credible messenger and trauma thriver to help them through their hardest times. Her research and advocacy interests include intimate partner violence, trauma informed care, violence prevention, healthcare disparities, social determinants of health, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and she has spoken numerous times on post traumatic stress and acute stress disorder and on her path from trauma thriver to trauma surgeon as well as on health care disparities in trauma. She is active on Twitter, now “X” as “grannysurgeon” and is well known for promoting positivity, diversity in surgery, equity, intimate partner violence awareness, violence prevention, mentorship, and wellness. She serves as a mentor for many students and residents and advocates for equity within graduate medical education. She has been particularly involved with mentoring non-traditional students, as well as in helping to promote gender, racial, and sexual orientation diversity within medical training programs. She is a prolific painter and she loves to spend time with her family which includes her husband, daughter, stepsons, and two beautiful granddaughters.
